Our Presenters: New Perspectives in Addictions
Travis Baker, Ph.D. (Candidate) was born and raised on Vancouver Island and has done most of his academic training there as well. After graduating with his bachelor degree in psychology from the University of Vancouver Island, he began his graduate studies at the University of Victoria under the supervision of Dr. Clay Holroyd, a leading expert on the neurobiological mechanisms that underlie cognitive control. Travis is currently completing his Ph.D. and his main research interest involves the investigation of the biological, behavioral, cognitive, genetic, and personality-related factors underlying substance dependence. He hopes his research will someday help improve the current therapeutic approaches to substance dependence.

Topic: Addiction: Is it a Brain Disease? Scientific Research Aims to Clear up the Debate
John Bradshaw, M.A. works with corporate and mental health related sponsors, presenting well-received and time-tested workshops and lectures, including the famous experiential healing Inner Child work, as well as many other Special Lecture Topics. Bradshaw continues to serve as a Senior Fellow at The Meadows in Wickenberg, Arizona near Phoenix. The Meadows has an extensive list of like-minded counseling professionals and treatments focusing on trauma, drug and alcohol addiction, compulsive behaviors (eating, gambling, work, sex, love addiction/avoidance), mood disorders (such as bi-polar disorder and depression) and anxiety disorders (including post-traumatic stress disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder and panic disorder.) John Bradshaw presents ten workshops with them around the country each year.

Andrew Galloway, ICADC, a Substance Abuse and Behavioural Health Specialist in private practice, is an International Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor (ICADC). He won the Award of Academic Excellence after completing his Addiction Studies at McMaster University. His private practice includes interventions, assessments, counselling and referral. In 2008, he was awarded the Transforming Lives Award from The Centre of Addiction and Mental Health. Besides his private practice, he is a counsellor for the National Hockey League and National Hockey PlayerŐs Association Substance Abuse and Behavioural Health Program. He often speaks at schools about addiction and was awarded The Harold A.D. Roberts Circle for volunteer service from one of those schools. Andrew is a regular interventionist featured on the Canadian Intervention Television Show. He is married and the father of two young boys.

Stephen Grinstead, Dr.AD., LMFT, ACRPS, CADC-II is an author and nationally recognized expert in preventing relapse related to chronic pain disorders and is the developer of the Addiction-Free Pain Management System. He has been working with pain management, addictive disorders and coexisting mental and personality disorders for two decades. Dr. Grinstead has a Bachelors Degree in Behavioral Science, a Masters Degree in Counseling Psychology and a Doctorate in Addictive Disorders. He is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, (LMFT) a California Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CADC-II), and an Advanced Relapse Prevention Specialist (ACRPS). He was on the faculty of UC Santa Cruz Extension Alcohol and Drug Studies Program and also taught at Santa Clara University, UC Berkeley Extension and Stanford University Medical School.

Lorne Hildebrand, Executive Director of EDGEWOOD, has an extensive background in organization consultation with over 20 years of management experience with various companies and service organizations. Lorne has dedicated much of his time to helping others better understand the science of addiction and has become a well-respected presenter in the field of addiction.

Topic: The Nature of Addiction and Successful Treatment: What You Should Know
Dale MacIntyre, M.Div, RCC is intrigued by communication and the potential for growth that occurs when people relate meaningfully with one another. His exploration of the power of communication began with careers as a newspaper columnist and current affairs producer with CBC radio. Pursuing his interest in the social, face-to-face aspect of communication, Dale turned to counseling and after becoming a registered clinical counselor, ran a private practice as a marriage and family counselor. His interest in addiction and its effect on the family brought Dale to EDGEWOOD Treatment Center as an addictions counselor. He is currently the Supervisor of Family Programs at EDGEWOOD where he continues his work helping families develop healthy communication and coping skills as they begin healing from the devastating effects of addiction.

Topic: Zeroing in on Ground Zero: Practical Ways to Identify and Treat Addiction in the Family
Lisa Najavits, Ph.D., ABPP is Professor of Psychiatry, Boston University School of Medicine; Lecturer, Harvard Medical School; clinical psychologist at VA Boston; and clinical associate, McLean Hospital. She is the author of Seeking Safety: A Treatment Manual for PTSD and Substance Abuse (2002) and A Woman's Addiction Workbook (2002), and over 140 professional publications. She is Past-President of the American Psychological Association Division on Addictions. Dr. Najavits has received various awards, including the 1997 Young Professional Award of the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies; the 1998 Early Career Contribution Award of the Society for Psychotherapy Research; the 2004 Emerging Leadership Award of the American Psychological Association Committee on Women; and the 2009 Betty Ford Award of the Association for Medical Education and Research in Substance Abuse. She is a practicing therapist and psychotherapy supervisor.

Mel Vincent, B.A.Sc, M.Sc., M.D., FRCP (C), ASAM was raised in Guelph, Ontario. He has a BSc-Nutrition from the University of Guelph and MSC-Nutrition from University of Toronto, a Medical Degree from McMaster University in 1984, and completed Psychiatry training in 1988. Dr. Vincent worked at Homewood Health Centre in Guelph for 5 years, 3 of which were full time addictions, and passed the American Society Addiction Medicine exam in 1992. In 2002 Dr. Vincent became the Director of Psychiatric Services at EDGEWOOD. Dr. Vincent is a past President of the British Columbia Psychiatric Association. He is currently a clinical instructor for the Addiction Division of the Department of Psychiatry, University of British Columbia.
