Major conference in Richmond highlights busy fall workshop season across Canada
Dear Colleagues: With our fall workshop season quickly approaching, at Jack Hirose and Associates we have been working throughout the summer to implement changes to better serve our loyal customers.
We are excited to present this fall Canada’s premier psychotherapy conference, “Healing and Treating Trauma, Addictions & Related Disorder” co-sponsored by Edgewood Treatment Centre to be held at the Sheraton Vancouver Airport Hotel in Richmond, British Columbia Nov. 16–19. We have invited 16 speakers including Dr. Patrick Carnes, Dr. Pat Love, Dr. Gabor Mate and many more. Dr. David Burns will be providing a one-day, pre-conference workshop on a new topic “ The 7 Deadly Addictions”. This conference will cover a broad range of topics including addictions, trauma, relationships, anxiety, depression, violence and more. For all those not able to attend all 4 days, we have 1, 2 and 3 day options available. If you are interested in acquiring further information about our conference or obtaining information about exhibiting opportunities please visit our website: http://conference2010.jackhirose.com/
HELP FOR LOCAL FOOD BANKS: This past spring, we developed a new program to support our local food banks in Calgary and Vancouver. With the support of our workshop participants, we were able to raise $500 worth of food in Vancouver and $1000. in Calgary. This fall, we intend to continue this program by donating funds and collecting cans of food at 3 of our upcoming events. The “Healing & Treating Trauma and Related Disorders” conference in Vancouver and at the “Emerging Trends in Addiction Treatment” workshop in Calgary and Winnipeg.
WORKSHOP AIDES: We have had an overwhelming response this past spring with our new Workshop Aide Program and would like to thank those participants who helped at our spring/summer events. We realize there have been large cut backs to training budgets throughout the past few years and these cuts have come at a time when professionals need high-quality training more than ever. The new Workshop Aide Program provides a significant discount in return for helping us out at the workshop. For more information go to this link: http://www.jackhirose.com/workshopaides.html

BOOKSTORE WITH A FOCUS: Another feature we are proud to introduce is our workshop bookstore, specializing in mental health, education and wellness. At our workshops we provide a broad range or books specialized for professionals in the mental health/education fields. If your organization is planning a large conference or event, we are willing to come and sell books at your event. We are able to tailor a selection of book titles to the educational needs of your participants. Your organization will receive 10% of the event gross book sales. For more information visit our website: http://bookstore.jackhirose.com
REGISTRATION CHANGES: We have also restructured our online registration system for our workshops. We understand that our limited office hours may not match with your schedule. Our tracking system indicates that the majority of our customers are registering online and outside work hours; often during the evenings and weekends. With our online registration system you can go online, type in your contact information and pay at your own convenience, at home or at work and at any time of the day.
NETWORKING WEBSITE: Finally, on a very exciting note, we are currently creating a networking website to enhance professional development. The new site will allow Jack Hirose workshop attendees the opportunity to collaborate with one another and set up ‘working groups’ throughout the country. Many attendees often work in remote areas throughout country and receive minimal support, therefore this new web site will allow attendees the opportunity to keep in touch, share ideas and enhance their professional growth. Many previous attendees of the Dr. Burns 30-hour intensives have expressed an interest in this new idea and we have taken upon ourselves to make this happen. Our new website will be up in running by early September. There will be no cost for this service.
Hope to see you at one of our fall events and with your continued support Jack Hirose & Associates will strive to provide the highest quality training possible in the mental health and educational fields.
Yours truly,
Jack

T'ai Chi philosophy of harmony and balance find a role in addiction recovery
By Jim Edwards
In 13th century China, Taoist monks developed T’ai Chi Chuan as a way to bring the balance and harmony they observed in nature to their practice of self-defense within the martial arts. Seeing repeated, yet opposing patterns such as the rise and fall of the tides, the daily cycle of light and dark and recurring seasons, they concluded that anything in the natural world that reached an extreme would automatically return to its opposite state.
Humans are also subject to extremes; physical, mental and emotional, but by maintaining balance between the forces of the mind and body from one moment to the next, spiritual harmony may be achieved. This is an important goal for people in recovery.
The practice of T’ai Chi improves both physical and mental health, but T’ai Chi also has a history of use in the treatment of addiction. As an experienced practitioner, EDGEWOOD counselor Jim Edwards believes strongly in the philosophy of harmony and balance that is the basis of T’ai Chi, and recognizes the helpful role such a practice can play in maintaining health and well-being in recovery. | Read more

From Chaos to Serenity: When Someone You Care About is Struggling with Addiction
By Janice Plattor
It’s not something most of us like to talk about. And if we don’t talk about it we are even less likely to reach out for help. But admitting that someone you love has addiction issues can begin the process of your own healing. It is important to realize that you are affected and you do need to heal, because the healing journey is not only for those experiencing the actual addiction.
When someone close to us is engaging in addictive behaviours we can easily become engulfed in his or her needs, scurrying around doing whatever we can to ‘help’. We may do this for years, wearing ourselves out, putting our own needs and wants on hold, yet experiencing no change to the status quo; the addicted person remains addicted and we find ourselves living a life in shambles with our hopes, dreams, aspirations and desires nowhere on the radar.
Added to this cycle of living our lives like a hamster on a wheel, guilt often rears its ugly head. The guilt we feel can be quite debilitating, and we often take on that emotion when someone we love has addiction issues. We may even go so far as to think the addiction is our fault, asking ourselves questions like: “If I had spent more time with my son when he was younger, would he be addicted to the Internet now?” or more loving partner, would my spouse be having affairs?” | Read more
