Dear Colleagues: Even though it’s just early March, I’m excited at the thought of getting back on the road to conduct workshops once again. Last year, we held our first workshops in Saint John and Halifax. This was my first opportunity to visit both cities and I enjoyed every minute except the seven-hour flight. When we landed, I grabbed my baggage and darted off in search of fresh Atlantic lobster. I accomplished my goal both times. I also had the chance to visit the quaint and charming Peggy’s Cove – a real treasure.
Please take a look at our spring line-up. It’s our goal to offer the highest quality training possible. This is why we have brought back acclaimed speakers to select Canadian cities: Dr. Gordon Neufeld, Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, Dr. Mel Levine, Dr. Paul Foxman, Dr. Ross Greene, Dr. David Burns, Dr. Scott Miller, Dr. Claudia Black and Dr. Gabor Mate. Please keep us in mind when planning your training budget.
We have added several new workshops to our lineup this spring. Dr. David Burns has developed a new one day workshop on the topic of “Working with Depressed and Anxious Children and Adolescents,” and Dr. Martha Straus will be providing a two-day workshop in Vancouver on the topic “All the Rage: Helping Adolescent Girls in Crisis.” We will also continue to offer our four-day intensives with Dr. Burns in Vancouver and Edmonton this summer. Edmonton is already sold out; Vancouver has about 25 seats remaining.

We soon will be adding several new features to our website which will enhance your workshop experience eg. more hotel information, directions to the workshop venue, nearby restaurants, areas to park near the workshop venue and special places of interest to visit in each city.

New Web store will extend the reach of workshops with quality videos and books
Our coast-to-coast workshops bring mental health and education professional development opportunities to major Canadian centres. But we realize that cost and distance remain a barrier for many professionals.
To respond to that need, later this month we are launching a Web store that will bring quality workshops in video format, as well as timely and relevant books. If you can't make it to our workshops, we'll try to bring the best to you.
Relaxation-response meditation effective for anxiety in both children and adults

Children are susceptible to the full range of anxiety disorders seen in adults, including panic attacks, post-traumatic stress disorder, generalized anxiety, social phobia, and obsessive-compulsive disorder. The American Psychiatric Association recognized this fact in 1994 when the current edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual was published with just one set of criteria for diagnosing anxiety in children and adults.
Many of the anxiety management strategies that are effective with adults are also appropriate and helpful for children. This includes practice of the Relaxation Response, a form of meditation proven to be beneficial for reducing anxiety and many other symptoms. Here is Dr. Foxman’s version of the Relaxation Response adjusted for children:
The Relaxation Response can be elicited by two steps practiced once or twice each day. Length of practice should be prescribed based on age, attention span, emotional maturity, motivation and other factors. Two to five minutes once per day would be appropriate for young children and length of time can be extended up to 25-20 minutes for adolescents.
These are the two steps:
- Repetition of a special word, phrase, prayer, sound or muscular activity that is synchronized with slow breathing
- Refocus on the repetition whenever other thoughts intrude
Research shows that the effectiveness of the Relaxation Response is enhanced when the repeated phrase has personal meaning. Therefore, collaborate with the child in selecting a “special word” or phrase. The phrase could consist of the name of a teddy bear or other calming or reassuring subject.
A two-syllable word or phrase is easiest for young children to synchronize with breathing. The first half of the word or phrase is repeated silently during the in-breath and the second half is repeated during the out-breath. A few examples:
- Re-lax
- Be calm
- Feel good
- Stay calm
- Peace-ful
- O-kay
- Ha-ppy
- Ted-dy
- Be strong
- I can

Dr. David Burns, M.D.: Cross-country workshops span a range of interests
Dr. Burns will be doing a variety of workshops in Canada this year. His popular workshop on the treatment of anxiety disorders, “Scared Stiff,” will be presented for the last time in Ottawa on May 20 and 21, 2009. His four-day intensives will be presented in Vancouver (July 7 – 10), Edmonton (July 14-17, 2009), and Mississauga (November 3-6). Edmonton is sold out, and only a few spots are left for Vancouver. The Toronto (Mississauga) intensive still has seats available. Finally, his new one-day program, “Working with Depressed and Anxious Children and Youth,” will be presented for the first time in London, Ontario on (June 2, 2009) and in Halifax, Nova Scotia on (June 3, 2009). Interest in family intervention in treating addiction spurs publication of new booklet
Many Canadians believe that people with drug or alcohol problems have to 'hit bottom' before they get help. Fortunately, families don't have to watch helplessly as their loved one continues on his/her destructive path. By taking a stand and confronting their loved one's behaviour, families can take the first steps towards a solution in a process known as the family intervention.
