Spring has sprung with blossoming ideas,
invigorating presenters and earlybird rates
Dear Colleagues: Where has the time gone – it is spring already! During the month of February, I thoroughly enjoyed watching our Olympic athletes perform on the world stage. The men’s gold medal hockey game against the United States was a really nail biter. When Sidney Crosby put that puck through the five-hole in overtime, I had never been more relieved. In some cases, a bronze medal is better than gold and watching Joannie Rochette skate toward a bronze medal just days after her mother’s death was truly inspirational and remarkable.
Our athletes did us proud and the volunteers and citizens in Vancouver/Whistler/Richmond did an outstanding job hosting the events.
Now that the Olympics have come and gone, it’s an opportune time to look ahead and plan for your continuing education needs.
Our liaison with Dr. David Burns is one of many successful friendships we have developed over the years. His Four-Day Intensive Training in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy workshops have been filling up quickly, with 50 spaces remaining in Winnipeg, July 13-16, 2010 and only a handful of seats remaining for Calgary, July 6-9, 2010. High demand has led us to schedule our first intensive with Dr. Burns in the Maritimes. This will be in Halifax, October 18-21, 2010. Visit our website, www.jackhirose.com for new and insightful articles from Dr. Burns.
GOOD NEWS: Heather Good, MSW, RSW will be joining Dr. Christine Courtois, Ph.D. and Dr. John Briere, Ph.D. in the New Advances in Trauma Treatment conferences in Calgary and Vancouver, co-sponsored by Sunshine Coast Health Centre. With more than 10 years in mental health therapy and in the area of addiction treatment, she brings her experience working in a mental health classroom with the Calgary Board of Education. She is the author of new book titled, Conscious Mindful Leadership: Your Path to Greatness in Work and Life.
At the Vancouver workshop with Dr. John Briere and Dr. Christine Courtoise, scheduled for May 26–28, 2010, we have created a program to support the Vancouver Food Bank. Please bring non-perishable food items, and for every can of food donated, Jack Hirose & Associates will contribute $1. Keep in mind that the Vancouver Food Bank is able to purchase $3 worth of food for every $1 donation. Spare change and cash donations will also be accepted. All proceeds will go to the local food bank. Thank you for supporting families and individuals in need.
We are extremely excited about hosting Canada’s premier psychotherapy conference, Healing and Treating Trauma, Addictions & Related Disorders. The conference is co-sponsored with Edgewood Treatment Centre, an internationally renowned private addictions treatment centre located on Vancouver Island. The event is scheduled to take place in Richmond, BC, November 16-19, 2010. Our conference line-up features 13 presenters, who have been carefully chosen for their outstanding presenting abilities and cutting-edge knowledge. We will be offering many topics relevant to mental health practitioners: multiple addictions, trauma, eating disorders, depression, anxiety, eroticized rage/anger, relationships, borderline personality disorder, dual disorders, cybersex, emotional self-regulation, dissociation and healing, EMDR: Trauma Power Tool, mindfulness and other topics. Edgewood Treatment Centre has been instrumental in planning this world class event and we thank them for their ongoing support. For details on sponsorship opportunities or for additional brochures, please visit our website or contact our office directly.
YOUTH ALCOHOL/DRUG INTENSIVE: After a five-year absence and due to many requests from youth agencies throughout the country, we decided to bring back our popular Four-Day Youth Focused Alcohol and Drug Training Intensive. The intensive is scheduled to take place in Richmond, BC, July 20–23, 2010. Featured speakers include: Dr. Gabor Mate, M.D., Dr. John Preston, Psy.D., Jane Middelton-Moz, M.S. and Dr. Michael Leeds, Ph.D. All speakers chosen for this intensive have presented previously for Jack Hirose and Associates and have received outstanding evaluations. Enrollment will be limited to 120 participants.
WORKSHOP AIDES SAVE: In tough economic times, health regions and school districts throughout the country are cutting back training budgets. These cuts come at a time when professionals need high-quality training more than ever. Jack Hirose & Associates has created a new program to help some people attend our workshops at a significant discount. We will be selecting 2 or 3 aides for every workshop. Please call our office ASAP if you are interested.
YOUR SOURCE FOR RELEVANT BOOKS: Please visit our bookstore at bookstore.jackhirose.com We have recently expanded our product line and will continue to bring in books not available at your local bookstore. With your support, we will continue to offer quality mental health and education workshops throughout the country. We hope to see you at one of our upcoming events.

Tools, Not Schools, of Therapy
Part 7: The Relapse Prevention Model
Copyright © 2008 by David D. Burns, M.D. Any reproduction, electronic or otherwise, is strictly prohibited without expression written permission of the author.
By David Burns, M.D.
In previous editions of this newsletter, I listed 12 models I use every day in my clinical work and teaching. They are:
1. The Measurement Model
2. The Empathy (Rogerian) Model
3. The Motivational Model
4. The Cognitive Model
5. The Behavioral Model
6. The Exposure Model
7. The Hidden Emotion Model
8. The Interpersonal Model
9. The Acceptance (Spiritual) Model
10. The Role-Playing (Gestalt) Model
11. The Psychodynamic Model
12. The Relapse Prevention Model
If comprehended and applied skillfully, any one of these models can be incredibly illuminating and effective for certain patients. If you learn to integrate all 12 models, you can do some truly spectacular clinical work.
In this edition of the newsletter, I’ll focus on the Relapse Prevention Model. This topic is especially important, because all patients will relapse following their initial recovery. This will be true regardless of whether their initial problem involved depression, anxiety, anger, a habit or an addiction. There are no exceptions. No one can be happy all the time. Sooner or later, the same problem will return to plague the patient again.
The relapse itself is not the problem. The real problem is the lack of acceptance and preparation. If patients accept the inevitability of relapses, and learn how to deal with them ahead of time, they’ll have the tools to deal with these inevitable setbacks.

Expanding awareness through mindfulness
and body-focused coaching
By Heather Good, MSW, RSW
In the last newsletter, I presented a case example of how to use a mindfulness breathing technique with a client struggling with addiction to the drug, Ecstasy. In this article, I will discuss another aspect of this model that I use in conjunction with mindfulness. I refer to this as Body-focused Coaching.
Body-focused Coaching assists clients to connect with their inner experience and learn from the wisdom of their body. Clients gain insight and explore their inner worlds in a manner that is non-judgmental, accepting, compassionate and curious. As a guide, you assist your clients to pay attention to the wisdom of the body. | Read this story
Addiction: A Powerful and Cunning Disease
You may suspect your patient is an alcoholic or addict, but you feel hesitant to confront them because then what? What do you do with them? Given that the average general practitioner has not received a lot of training in addiction medicine, they may also feel reluctant to diagnose due to a lack of available resources. “I am grateful for the privilege of working in a place where a clinical team and support staff work together to provide optimum care for patients, but many family physicians, and mental health professionals alike, feel they are on their own,” says Director of Medical Services at EDGEWOOD, Dr. Gary Richardson. | Read this story
