Greetings!
My non-profit, Lives in the Balance, is teaming up with Jack Hirose & Associates on the British Columbia School-Based Mental Health Conference. This conference will be taking place on November 7 – 9, 2016 in Richmond, BC.  We have put together what I think is an extremely dynamic and informative group of speakers, including Dr. Lynne Kenney, Lynn Lyons, MSW, Lisa Ferentz, LCSW, Dr. Donald Meichenbaum, Dr. Gordon Neufeld, and myself.

The goal, as always, is to do everything possible to ensure that all students – and especially those with social, emotional, and behavioral challenges – are understood and treated in the most humane, compassionate, and effective ways, and my goal for this conference is to continue moving things in that direction.  So I hope you will be able to join us for as many days of the conference as you possibly can.

Day 2 – Tuesday, November 8, 2016

First Keynote – 8:30 am – 10:15 am

Anxious Kids, Anxious Families: How to Stop the Worry Cycle at Home and School

Presented by Lynn Lyons, MSW

Anxiety disorders take a tremendous toll on individuals and families. By demanding certainty and comfort in rather dramatic fashion, anxiety grabs control in a way that interrupts lives, promotes avoidance, and leads to depression and physical issues. Anxiety runs in families, with children who are raised by a parent with an anxiety disorder being six to seven times more likely to develop anxiety themselves, thus interrupting this generational pattern of anxiety is critical.

Second Keynote – 10:30 am – 12:00 pm

The Impact of Trauma on Children

Presented by Lisa Ferentz, LCSW.

In this keynote address we will explore the attachment styles that develop in dysfunctional and toxic families and the inherent challenge it creates for children when they are forced to stay connected to abusive caretakers.  We will also process the long-term cognitive, behavioral, social, and emotional impact of trauma, abuse, and neglect.  Participants will learn about factors that exacerbate the symptoms as well as mitigating factors that can reduce the impact on a child’s evolving development.  Videotapes, clients’ artwork and case scenarios will give participants a greater understanding of the toll that trauma takes.

Afternoon Concurrent Session Option One – 1:15 pm – 4:00 pm

Introduction to Plan B

Presented by Ross W. Greene, Ph.D.

When you’re solving problems collaboratively, you’re partnering with kids so solve the problems that affect their lives, improving communication, enhancing relationships, coming to solutions that are more durable and effective, and teaching lagging skills. In this workshop, Dr. Greene will review the basics.

Afternoon Concurrent Session Option Two – 1:15 pm – 4:00 pm

Anxious Kids, Anxious Families: How to Stop the Worry Cycle at Home and School

Presented by Lynn Lyons, MSW

When children and their parents are in the grips of worry and stress, it feels overwhelming and mysterious. Anxiety is a very persistent master; when it moves into families, it takes over daily routines, schoolwork, bedtime and recreation. To make matters worse, the things adults (including many therapist and school systems) do to help and console anxious children actually make the worry cycle stronger. The great news? Research shows that modifying certain patterns makes a big difference in whether or not children go on to become anxious or depressed teens and adults. This workshop teaches the seven concrete strategies that normalize worry help families respond and react to worry in a different way.

Afternoon Concurrent Session Option Three – 1:15 pm – 4:00 pm

Understanding & Working with the Developmental Challenges of Adolescence

Presented by Lisa Ferentz, MSW

Parents, teachers, and helping professionals often struggle in their interactions with adolescents: misreading their moods and needs, and inadvertently communicating in ways that create tension and increase disconnection. This workshop will offer adults new insights into adolescent development and the adolescent brain, which will increase their understanding and empathy towards teenagers. We will reframe “difficult” adolescent behaviours, giving participants a new way to understand and work with “resistance” and “non-compliance.” Particular attention will be paid to fostering cooperation and improving communication with adolescents.

Day 3 – Wednesday, November 9, 2016

First Keynote – 8:30 am – 10:15 am

Ways to Make schools Safer, More Inviting, and More Effective

Presented by Don Meichenbaum, Ph.D.

Teachers are confronted by beginning students who may differ by as many as two to three grade levels and this educational gap is likely to increase over their years of schooling. This gap contributes to a high school drop out rate. In short, “smart“ students keep getting smarter and the less school-ready students fall further and further behind. This keynote will consider how these differences emerge and offer specific ways to close this educational gap. How to make schools more inviting, safer and more pedagogically effective will be considered.

Second Keynote – 10:30 am – 12:00 pm

The Heart of the Matter: The Science of Emotions

Presented by Gordon Neufeld, Ph.D.

There is much focus today on children’s emotions. constructs like emotional intelligence, emotional self-regulation, emotional well-being and emotional social learning are being bandied about like never before. Emotion, long dismissed as a nuisance factor, is now confirmed to be at the core of development and well-being. Yet little is being taught about the nature of emotion or the implications for parenting and teaching and treatment.

Afternoon Concurrent Session Option One – 1:15 pm – 4:00 pm

Advanced Plan B

Presented by Ross W. Greene, Ph.D.

If you’re clear on the basics, you’re ready for the more nuanced aspects of solving problems collaboratively, including strategies for gathering information about kids’ concerns, helping non- communicative kids express their concerns, dealing with defensiveness, and coming to realistic and mutually satisfactory solutions. Lots of sample videos in this workshop.

Afternoon Concurrent Session Option Two – 1:15 pm – 4:00 pm

How to Make an Aggressive and Violent Youth: Implications for Prevention and Treatment Interventions

Presented by Don Meichenbaum, Ph.D.

Aggressive behaviour is relatively stable throughout development. This workshop will consider the multiple pathways by which boys versus girls develop aggressive behaviours and the implications for both prevention and treatment. Specific guidelines and interventions will be offered on what can be done on a school-wide basis (for example, reading comprehension programs, bully prevention and parent involvement), and on a more in depth basis involving principals, school counselors and psychologists, and ways to conduct wrap around services. a consideration of what “works” and what makes things “worse“.

Afternoon Concurrent Session Option Three – 1:15 pm – 4:00 pm

The Heart of the Matter: The Science of Emotions

Presented by Gordon Neufeld, Ph.D.

In this workshop, Neufeld outlines five basic steps to emotional health and development so adults can foster emotional well-being and get to the root of such problems as alarm, anxiety, agitation, aggression, impulsiveness, lack of empathy, bullying, and so on. this workshop is powerful in the insight it provides as well as the changes it inspires. To make sense of emotion is to make sense of us all. There is no better way to glean insight into oneself and others. Having a working knowledge of the science of emotion should be a prerequisite for anyone responsible for children or working with adults.

“I personally loved the long history’ style intro. More speakers need to do this. You underscore and synthesize the multiple contributors that illustrate where psychology has come from. Love! The science part! More chemistry and physics please. A truly gifted and needed speaker in this field. I have gotten so much out of this workshop both professionally and personally. Gordon’s way of speaking is incredibly professional, he cannot stop working for along time!! I will want to both do more courses and come back with my husband and do this again. Thank you, will see you again.”
