BEFORE YOU CAN UNDERSTAND ADDICTION it is important to understand the nature of addiction itself. In this presentation, Lorne Hildebrand will discuss the nature of the disease of addiction, the difference between drug and/or alcohol abuse and dependence, how you identify the problem and what individuals can do specifically to address it.
Abuse is the intentional overuse of substance that results in the failure to meet obligations, physical harm, legal problems and/or continued use despite social censure. Dependence is the disease of addiction; a dysfunction of one or more neurotransmitter chemicals that leads to tolerance, lack of control over use and withdrawal. People become addicted for a number of reasons: genetic factors, the way drugs interact with the brain, and/or mental health issues, (i.e., co-occurring disorders such as anxiety, bi-polar, depression, schizophrenia).
From the assembly line to the board room, addiction costs the workforce and the community at large in both time and money through increased health care expenses, absenteeism, replacement labor and job site accidents, to name but a few. Early intervention, coupled with assessments, treatment referrals and follow-up aftercare and monitoring services have proven extremely effective in improving recovery outcomes. Family members, healthcare providers and employers are uniquely positioned to affect early intervention and motivate individuals to seek treatment and the support they need.
Light refreshments will be offered. This session is open to the general public. |
